Gaining an understanding of the CP can empower you to observe fluctuations in breathing efficiency, assess your capacity to tolerate carbon dioxide, and develop more conscious control over your respiratory system.

What Is the Control Pause?

The Control Pause (CP) is not an exercise but a measurement. Its purpose is to provide an objective snapshot of your body's current tolerance to CO2. The method is simple but precise and is best repeated in identical circumstances for reliability.

Typically, it is advised to measure your CP in the morning, directly after waking up, before daily fluctuations and environmental factors can influence the result. Optionally, you can repeat the measurement in the evening to observe daily variations.

How to Measure the Control Pause

A practical exercise is to perform breath-holds at half your measured CP value. For example, if your CP is 14 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds at a time, interspersed with free breathing and deep relaxation, over a period of five minutes.

This helps bring respiratory chemistry into balance, supports parasympathetic activation, and increases awareness of your breathing patterns.

Factors Influencing Your Control Pause

CP values are dynamic, influenced by time of day, activity level, emotional arousal, and even hormonal cycles.

Women, for example, may notice lower CP measurements during the fertile phase of the cycle or late in the luteal phase when progesterone is high. These physiological changes are normal and reflect broader shifts in respiratory sensitivity.

Nutrition, Habits, and the Control Pause

Several lifestyle factors can impact CP. Consuming foods or substances such as chocolate, coffee, sugar, alcohol, and cigarettes often lowers the CP by stimulating the respiratory system and increasing air hunger.

Conversely, relaxing practices and certain nourishing foods”like beets or natural fats”can enhance relaxation and CP values. Experiment with reducing stimulants and notice improvements in your numbers and how you feel.
