Plants do not want to be eaten. Almost all plants, therefore, contain food poisons to deter their predators from eating them. Only with fruit, it is a little different: Many fruits are produced by the plant exclusively so that animals eat them. However, plants provide ripe fruits only at very specific times of the year: In the summer and early autumn. If it is consumed, then the fructose it contains has the purpose of providing animals with plenty of rare, sweet calories to put on some weight for the coming winter. In addition, fruit contains vitamins and secondary plant substances (often polyphenols), which additionally strengthen the animal. The plant thereby enters into an unspoken trade with the animal: The animal is supposed to excrete the seeds it eats in another place, thus ensuring the plant's continued existence. Therefore, the seeds and pips in fruit are usually indigestible.
