What exactly are age spots and what do they mean?

The so-called age spots are caused by a substance called lipufuscin. This pigment accumulates inside cells, more precisely in the lysosomes. If a sufficient number of cells (that is, hundreds of thousands) that are directly adjacent to each other are affected, then this pigment can be seen with the naked eye:

Non-regularly circumscribed skin appearances form, colloquially known as age spots.
