Carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced during the oxidation of fats and carbohydrates. It is released from the cells into the blood, then passes from the blood into the alveoli and is exhaled with the next breath. One might think it is a pure waste product of metabolism, but this is not true. Because on its way out of the body, CO2 fulfills a number of important tasks.
