If blue light falls into the human eye, it suppresses the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. A deficiency of melatonin leads to poorer sleep structure and delayed falling asleep as well as poorer sleeping through the night. Therefore, the basic recommendation is to avoid blue and white light (full spectrum, with many blue components) three hours before going to sleep, so that melatonin production can start well before falling asleep. But why blue light in particular?
