Vitamin C also has the name ascorbate because, as an "anti-scurvy" agent, it was able to cure scurvy among sailors and soldiers. Scurvy is a disease in which the body is no longer able to produce connective tissue. This is because enzymes containing vitamin C are necessary for this. Since vitamin C is water-soluble, a deficiency develops after only a few weeks, so that a few months at sea with cured meat and ship's rusks were unproblematically sufficient for scurvy to break out. Because no new connective tissue can be formed, but old connective tissue is broken down, teeth, for example, fall out, but blood vessels are also seriously damaged, which ultimately leads to death.
