With few exceptions, quicksilver entered the food chain through humans. Quicksilver can be used to make batteries, to wash gold, and to make pesticides. The latter led to dramatic mass poisonings well into the 1970s. Ultimately, however, human-produced quicksilver has accumulated, particularly in the marine food chain.
