How opiate painkillers lead to cancer progression

Increasingly, large studies prove that painkillers containing opiates cause cancer diseases to progress more rapidly and more severely. Meanwhile, basic research has found that the perception of oxygen levels at the cellular level plays a central role in this. When opiates are administered - which is partly essential for pain control in cancer - they not only dock onto certain pain receptors but also activate a protein called HIF-1alpha in the cells.
