Iron is a double-edged sword. This transition metal is an important component of many human enzymes. We absolutely need it for oxygen transport as well as for burning oxygen in the mitochondria. For these functions, iron must be a metal that is reactive with oxygen. Outside of the desired functions, it can also cause damage through its reactions.
