Heavy metals occur like other metallic elements in the earth's crust. Through the industrialization they were partly specifically mined and used. As waste products they entered biological cycles. But they are out of place there, because living beings do not need these metals at all. From the group of heavy metals, only chromium, copper and zinc are necessary for life, but not arsenic, lead, cadmium and quicksilver.
