Folic acid can be measured directly in the blood. This captures to some extent whether there is an absolute deficiency in the body, but not exactly how good the supply is functional in the cells. It is smarter to determine homocysteine. Homocysteine is an intermediate product of the folic acid level. It is increased when the metabolism lacks folic acid.
