What happens when specific dietary fibers are added to our food? Unfortunately, animal experiments do not have particularly good answers, because often dietary fibers were used far more than the quantities that a person could realistically consume. At least we know from these experiments that extreme amounts (i.e. cellulose) leads to damage of the lining intestinal cells. As a result their cell division rate increases, to provide a replacement. The increase in cell division rate is a counterproductive effect in terms of preventing colorectal cancer.
