In Animals

The effects of carotenoids on tumors have been tested in animal studies. Of the carotenoids, beta-cryptoxanthin provides the best protection against colon and lung cancer, as the substance accumulates particularly in mucosal cells. In part, the experiments were also conducted directly with Satsuma mandarins, which are particularly rich in beta-cryptoxanthin. Breast cancer, on the other hand, is best prevented by lutein. Astaxanthin, found in krill, crustaceans and salmon also shows effects against oral cavity, breast and colon cancer.
