Aflatoxins are formed by certain types of molds. These infest peanuts, spices (pepper), coffee, dried fruit (figs), and nuts, especially at high ambient temperatures and high humidity. Particularly high levels are regularly found in pistachios. Due to the condition of high humidity/temperature, imported goods are particularly affected. Globally, it is estimated that 5 billion people regularly ingest aflatoxins with their food.
