Atrial fibrillation, in which the atrium beats independently of the ventricles, is by far the most significant cause of stroke. Typically, physicians try to detect atrial fibrillation early and then give anticoagulant drugs to prevent clot formation in the fibrillating atrium. Unfortunately, however, neither measure can reliably prevent strokes. In addition, one of the main side effects of anticoagulants is (brain) hemorrhage. Fatally, the effects of a cerebral hemorrhage are often more serious than even a major stroke. So what is more obvious than to try to prevent already the emergence of atrial fibrillation?
